I used to live in Portland and I couldn’t agree more with the author. The hipster posers want to give an aura that says “I don’t care.” The truth is that they do care about their image. Everything is designed to give off a certain impression. If they really didn’t care, they would buy cheap generic stuff at the thrift store… instead, they buy expensive clothing that is designed to mimic certain styles (and they will lie and say they got it at goodwill).

For those of you saying that this is a Gen-X problem, I point you to the current billboard music chart. The #1 song is called “Thift Shop” by Macklemore. The fact that this song is so popular should signal that the search for authenticity is alive and well.
